Physician

Organizations acquiring an automated external defibrillator must obtain approval from a physician for the purchase. In this regard, the State EMS office suggests a physician medical director.

CPR/AED Training

Intended AED operators must undergo training in AED usage offered by the American National Red Cross or the American Heart Association, or through an approved equivalent course endorsed by the Department of Health in collaboration with a technical committee of the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council.

EMS Notification

The Pennsylvania State EMS Office suggests informing the regional EMS council, local EMS providers, and/or local 911 centers when implementing an AED.

Maintenance

The defibrillator must be maintained and tested in accordance with the manufacturer's operational guidelines.

Notification of Use

An AED user must use all available methods to promptly contact and activate the emergency medical services system. Any relevant data or information should be provided to emergency medical services personnel or other healthcare providers upon request.
