Physician

An individual acquiring an automated external defibrillator must ensure that a physician medical director supervises all aspects of the AED program, including training, coordination with emergency medical services, protocol approval, deployment strategies, and other program requirements. The physician medical director is also responsible for ensuring overall quality assurance and reviewing each case in which the defibrillator is used within the program.

CPR/AED Training

Targeted responders who have received training should undergo appropriate instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the operation of an automated external defibrillator through a nationally recognized course in cardiopulmonary response and automated external defibrillator use that is approved by the department or other training programs authorized by the department.

EMS Notification

The automatic external defibrillator must be registered with the Department of Health, and the local emergency medical services and 911 agencies must be informed about the AED program.

Maintenance

The defibrillator must be maintained and tested in accordance with the manufacturer's operational guidelines.

Notification of Use

Any individual providing emergency care or treatment to a person experiencing cardiac arrest using an automated external defibrillator should activate the emergency medical system promptly and inform the physician medical director of any clinical use of the defibrillator.
