9 Frequently Asked Questions About CPR

1.Why is CPR so important?

When CPR is performed on a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) within the first few minutes, a person's chance of survival will double and can even triple. The chance of survival decreases by 10% every minute that goes by without a shock from an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR making immediate intervention crucial.  70% of all SCA events occur at home, meaning that if you ever witness an SCA the life you save will most likely be that of a loved one.

2. Does CPR really make a difference?

Yes.  When you learn CPR you are given the tools to save a victim of SCA.  SCA, also known as Sudden Death, affects more than 300,000 adults and children in the United States every year.  According to the American Heart Association (AHA), 9 out of 10 out-of-hospital SCA victims die.   When bystanders act quickly and are able to perform CPR and use an AED within the first three minutes, 1 in 3 victims survive.

3. Who can learn CPR?

Anyone can and should consider learning CPR.  According to the AHA, studies have shown that children as young as nine have the ability to learn CPR.  Many states in the U.S. are now making it a mandatory graduation requirement for high school seniors.    As more people gain their CPR certifications, more lives can and will be saved.
