AEDs at college

1 Thing to Consider Before Choosing a College

When selecting a college an important question to ask is whether or not there’s an AED located in the residence halls.  An AED is a machine that shocks the heart of a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  With most Sudden Cardiac Arrests occurring at home, the dorm should be the most important place to have an AED.  CPR performed straight away, coupled with an AED machine gives the victim a 90% chance of survival.  The chance of survival drops by 10% every minute that goes by without an AED.  If a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest is left to rely solely on medical personnel, often times they won’t get the help they need for at least 15 minutes.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest in college students can be caused by many different factors.

  1. Many people have undetected heart abnormalities. College students with heart abnormalities need to be protected if something were to happen to change their heart rhythm.   If your dorm doesn’t have an AED present, you won’t be as protected as you should be.  For the safety of students, everyone living on campus should be aware of the AEDs locations and should understand when to use them.

2. Drug and alcohol overdoses are a common occurrence on campus, and they can lead to a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. If a student is unconscious due to an overdose an AED can save them.  With an AED located in the dorms, one bad mistake doesn’t have to be a death sentence.

3. A blow to the chest can cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Sometimes fun and games can take an ugly turn if someone falls unconscious after being hit in the chest.  If there’s an AED located in the dorm building and the residences know where it’s located, the victim has a greater chance of recovering.

The good news is that anyone who comes across an unconscious person can use an AED.  They’re easy to use and come with both visual and voice prompts to help lead you through the Sudden Cardiac Arrest rescue.  This is useful for the RA and other bystanders that come across a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

With AEDs being easier to use than ever, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be placed in the residence halls.  Awareness of the AED locations and the ability to perform CPR are two key factors in saving a student who’s suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
