California AED Laws

California AED Laws: California Senate Bill No. 287 on AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators)

What is Senate Bill 287?

This legislation, signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in October 2015, mandates that any non-governmental buildings with an occupancy threshold of 200 people will require operational AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in all new construction. This law is in effect January 1, 2017.

How does this Bill affect the expansion of my business?

With the recommendation of one AED device per 70,000 square feet of facility space, business owners must now assess not only the fiscal variables in complying with this law but logistical considerations as well—how many AEDs should this building have? Who will monitor and manage them? Where can they be placed so they’ll be easily retrieved?
